Anglesey Sea Kayak Weekend

A long weekend of enjoyable sea paddling exploring different sections of the coastline.

This weekend can be either training or assessment towards British canoeing's Sea Kayak Award  - if you have the relevent previous experience then you can be assessed throughout the weekend, if not then come and enjoy a weekend packed with training!

The first day will be looking at boat handling and basic trip planning (weather, tides and tidal streams etc). On the second day we'll do a slightly longer paddle possibly ventureing a little further off shore. All the routes we use offer great scenery and lots of interesting marine life, and alternatives if the wind is blowing a hooly!

By the end of the weekend, you will have the skills and confidence to get out and have fun on easy coastal journeys. We will also look at various rescue skills relevant to the sea environment.

This course is non-residential. We usually meet on Saturday morning or Friday night, and stay in a Youth hostel or bunk house, so you are welcome to join us if you like, or to make your own arrangements if you'd prefer.

This course is for you if: You have good flat water kayaking skills, and some experience of either sea kayaking or white water. You'll need to be confident capsizing (and rolling if you are going for 3* assessment). Its especially for those who feel "the pull of the sea" - the desire for fresh, sea air and the fun adventure of being guided along rugged coastlines that meet the mighty sea. Or if you are paddling at 3 star standard and need assessment to prove it!

"Thanks to all involved in making this sea kayaking trip to Anglesey happen and be such and enjoyable experience. As novices to kayaking on the sea we were both excited and nervous about the experience, but it totally exceeded our expectations in terms of the great level of coaching, guidance and encouragement we received, and also what we were able to achieve by the end of the weekend. The plan had been to paddle out from Moelfre on the east coast, but due to the strong easterly wind on that particular weekend, this option was not suitable for beginners. We were given a number of other options for the two days from Matt, who clearly had a wealth of knowledge of the area, and the advantages and possible limitations of each option were clearly explained. Our preferences and aims were listened to and the two days gave us contrasting experiences of paddling on the west and north coasts. Each day started with a briefing and we were introduced to the use of maps, charts, tide times and using weather forecasts and local knowledge to plan a trip safely. This could have been very technical and offputting for beginners, but actually the briefings were very easy to follow and I felt I'd learned a lot about the basics of planning and safety from this. Books for further reading were recommended and these also looked clear and informative so we will definitely follow this up before our next trip. On the first day we paddled out from the west coast and standing on the shore I felt a little concerned about the swell and the size of the waves. Matt took care to make sure I was launched safely and Libby, Dave and Jeremy kept an eye on me once on the water to make sure I was coping. All the staff were very encouraging and really built our confidence up. By Day 2, I was able to launch myself, reverse into a cave and cross a bay straight into the wind. We were given the opportunity to experience being towed and although I was pleased that I didn't need this for real, it was reassuring to have had the experience of how safe this felt if it had been required. We were able to watch the more experienced paddlers practise rescues and rolls and tackle some of the bigger waves, and again, learnt a lot from simply observing their technique. Unfortunately, a friend on the trip experienced severe sea sickness and she was supported to get safely to shore when it was clear she wasn't able to continue. The concern and care to make sure she was OK without making this into a huge issue was pitched just right. All in all, it was a hugely fun, enjoyable and rewarding trip. It was challenging in places, especially for those of us more used to an hour's kayak rental on the Leam, but in a good way. We were given lots of encouragement to try different skills but never pushed too quickly or too far. I would recommend this trip to anyone thinking of trying sea kayaking for the first time as well as to those who want to develop their skills and work towards the BCU 3* award."
