REC First Aid - 2 days

A 2 day first aid course designed for people leading and playing in the outdoors environment!

Most of this course will be spent outside, looking at real situations that you could find yourself in whilst out in the countryside, mountains and rivers. The recurring theme is that of adapting first aid principles to deal with people in a cold, wet, wilderness environment, where help may be a long way away.

Topics covered include:

-Primary and secondary survey, and adaptations to deal with a casualty in   outdoors kit
-CPR and EAV
-Using a Defibrillator
-Dealing with airway problems
-Deformities and injuries
-Illness
-Immobilisation of breaks, including improvisation with items of outdoors kit
-Managing a suspected spinal injury
-Looking after a casualty for an extended period
-Evacuation of a casualty from the environment
-Scenarios
-Contents of a good outdoors first aid kit, and other kit to carry with you

There is scope for this course to be adapted to the needs of the participants, whether you are coaching kayaking to kids on your local pond, or are out with friends on the mountains every weekend!

The course is assessed throughout the weekend, so you don't have to worry about an exam at the end. On successful completion of the course, you will receive a 2 day REC first aid certificate, widely regarded as the best out there for outdoors sports, and accepted by most NGB's (including British Canoeing). The certificate fee is £5, payable on the day.

This course meets the British Canoeing requirements for 4* leaders, and level 3 and above coaches.

Reviews

"Excellent course covering a broad range of first aid, aimed specifically at paddlers. As a complete novice to first aid I found it simple to understand easy to follow, while giving plenty of opportunities to practise techniques learnt. The course covered minor injuries through to stabilising a critical patient, with a strong focus on paddling being taught by a coach who was obviously very experienced in the sport. Would recommend to a beginner to intermediate at first aid looking for a first aid course."

"We did this course at the weekend, if anyone is unsure whether to attend, do it! It was a really useful course, really applicable to kayaking, but also useful in the real world, and in my opinion everyone should have knowledge of first aid, you never know when you might need it."

"The best thing about the first aid course was it was exactly what we asked for, a kayak-water sports based first aid course. The course was tailored to our needs, yet still contained all the vital information, which was brilliant making it so much more worthwhile and relevant. We learnt all the skills you would expect to learn at a first aid course, but these were taken further as there was the assumption help wasn’t just 5minutes away, so a survival element was incorporated. The course included water based rescues and was very practical, but this reflexed our requests and needs, the option for a more theory based course would have been available had that been what we wanted. All in all brilliant."
